What could have been a tiny project has completely changed my life.”

We caught up with Apps for Good student Ellora who is now studying a BSc (Hons) in Ethical Hacking, something she didn’t know existed until she took the Apps for Good course in 2015.

What was your project?

Envirocache, it was all about getting out into the countryside, it’s what we all enjoyed doing, but recognised it wasn’t like that for everyone. We wanted to do something that brought together technology and being outside. So we gamified going outdoors.

What did you enjoy the most about the course?

Getting to learn more about technology and realising it's something I actually really enjoyed doing. I developed the website on behalf of my team and worked on building the prototype of the app. I loved getting to do the practical side of things and it really built my confidence just by doing different things.

Reflecting back, what was the biggest thing you took away from the course?

What could have been a tiny project has completely changed my life.

Having Apps for Good on my CV really helped with getting placements and set me up well for interviews and presentations at university. I’m not afraid to get up and speak in front of large groups of people as I had the opportunity to do it with Apps for Good.

What are you doing now, how has the AfG course impacted that?

I am studying a BSc (Honors), Ethical Hacking, at Abertay University, a course that I didn’t even know existed, but Apps for Good really opened my eyes to the possibility.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about taking part in an Apps for Good course?

Have fun with it, it’s a real opportunity to get involved. Listen to all the feedback you get as it will really set you up for the future.

We are celebrating a decade of Apps for Good, if you enjoyed this we have lots more for you to explore on our 10 years page, and here on our blog.
